 Poland to miss TPD deadline

The Polish government is not expected to meet the May 20 deadline for transposing the EU’s new Tobacco Products Directive (TPD) into national law, according to a Polish News Bulletin story.

A draft bill that emerged from the cabinet on March 8 still needs to be approved by the European Commission because it includes provisions that go beyond what is stipulated in the TPD.

For instance, the Polish government wants additional limits on sales of electronic cigarettes.

According to experts polled by the Dziennik Gazeta Prawna daily, the delay has to do with the tardiness on the part of legislators.

As a consequence, the draft bill was reportedly referred to the Commission too late by the Development Ministry.

It is not certain when the TPD will be transposed in Poland.
