 Shopkeepers jailed for selling tobacco

Police in Thimphu, Bhutan, detained 10 betel-leaf shop owners for selling tobacco products, reports Kuensel.

Bhutan’s Narcotic Control Agency, police and customs fined 35 people for illegal possession of tobacco products and for smoking in public. Eight people were fined btn1,000 ($13.33) each for failing to supervise and carry out measures to ensure that no person smoked within their premises.

Those found smoking in non-smoking areas are fined btn500, and btn400 for illegal possession of tobacco product within permissible limit.

Bhutan banned the sale and consumption of tobacco products in December 2004.
