Support for transport smoking ban

 Support for transport smoking ban

The social and labour committee of the Latvian parliament, the Saeima, has supported a proposed ban on smoking on public transport, in taxis, and in state- or municipally-owned vehicles, according to a LETA news agency report.

Under the proposal, long-distance trains and ships would have to have special rail cars and cabins for smokers.

The committee has indicated also that it is in favor of a study’s being undertaken into the effects that would be felt from a ban on smoking while driving a vehicle.

But the report said also that the committee ‘has supported a proposal not to ban smoking inside private cars’.
