 Zimbabwe decentralizes sales

The decentralization of tobacco sales floors in Zimbabwe is benefiting some contracted growers by cutting transport costs and eliminating accommodation charges, according to a story in the Zimbabwe Herald.

The Tobacco Industry and Marketing Board has licensed the Mashonaland Tobacco Company to operate sales floors at Karoi and Mvurwi, allowing local growers to sell their crops closer to their farms.

Early results indicated that the initiative has speeded up the process for the local growers while prices have remained on a par with those received in Harare.

And as well as benefiting local growers, the initiative has helped cut congestion at the Harare floors.
