Malawi farmers seek to sell abroad

Tobacco farmers at Limbe Auction Floors in Malawi have asked the government to give them permission to sale their leaf abroad, reports The Nyasa Times. The request follows a high rate of tobacco rejection at the market.

Tobacco farmers said they were baffled with the high rejection rate of tobacco, calling it unprecedented.

“They have rejected my tobacco seven times yet the quality is very good. We don’t know what they are looking for,” said grower Amos Mangani.

The unstable tobacco prices and the high rejection rate of tobacco have wreaked havoc in Malawi’s economy, according to local economists.

Officials from Limbe Auction Floors said they were in discussions with tobacco buyers about the situation.
