 Kuwait prepares for tax increase

Kuwait’s Cabinet has asked the Ministry of Finance to prepare an ordinance for imposing tax on tobacco and its derivatives, according to a story in the Arab Times citing a report in the Al-Anba daily.

Quoting what it described as ‘highly reliable sources’ within the ministry, the Times said the cabinet had instructed the ministry to co-ordinate with the Fatwa and Legislation Department in drafting the ordinance.

The sources said this step was part of the process of implementing a decision taken by the Gulf Co-operation Council (GCC) to address the low tobacco taxes imposed under the unified GCC customs charges

The new measure is due to double the current minimum charges.

The sources added the new ordinance would be implemented in September.
