PM Thailand tax-evasion charges head for court

Thailand’s Office of the Attorney-General (OAG) has filed in the criminal court a multi-billion-baht tax evasion lawsuit against Philip Morris Thailand (PMTL), according to a story by King-Oua Laohong for the Bangkok Post.

PMTL’s management says that the lawsuit is ‘without merit and unjust’.

The indictment was issued on Monday by the OAG against PMTL and its Thai employees, OAG spokesman Somnuek Siangkong said on Tuesday.
The OAG alleges that PMTL under-reported the value of cigarettes it imported from the Philippines between 2003 and 2006 to avoid paying the full amount of tax on them.

The court has called the plaintiff and defendants to a meeting on April 25.
