Smoking steadily in Luxembourg

 Smoking steadily in Luxembourg

A leading health body is calling for the retail price of cigarettes to be increased in Luxembourg after a survey showed that smoking rates had changed little in recent years, according to a Luxembourger Wort story.

A survey by Luxembourg’s Cancer Foundation has found that while the incidence of smoking fell from about 25 percent to 20 percent during the past 10 years, it had remained at 20 percent for the past three years.

Half of the smokers polled said they wanted to quit and a fifth wanted to cut back.

The Foundation concluded in its report that the only solution was to increase the price of tobacco products, which were among the cheapest in Europe.

The survey was carried out by TNS Ilres among 3,746 people aged 15 and above. The results were published on Tuesday.

They showed, among other things, that five percent of the population, equivalent to 23,450 people, smoked shisha, and that 5,000 people were vapers.
