 Two-thirds of vapers quit smoking

A poll of smokers and vapers in Wales has shown that 65 percent of electronic cigarette users have quit tobacco smoking, according to a story in the South Wales Argus.

Conducted on No Smoking Day, the poll, which involved 1,000 smokers and vapers, found also that 63 percent of electronic cigarette users say they’re using these devices as an aid to stop smoking tobacco.

And it found that in Wales:

  • Seventy percent of electronic cigarette users would like more research to be done into the potential risks of using these devices.
  • Twenty-six percent of all smokers polled said they were confused about the health messages they receive about electronic cigarettes.

Commenting on the poll results, Dr. Mike Knapton, associate medical director at the British Heart Foundation, said that though vaping was much less harmful than was smoking cigarettes, there was no doubt that more research was needed into the potential long term effects of the use of electronic cigarettes.

“This unique study shines a light on just how popular vaping has become as an aid for smokers in Wales trying to quit and we need to listen to what is helping people the most on their path to a smoke free life,” he said.
