 Higher tobacco taxes demanded

Members of more than 100 anti-tobacco organizations were due today to form human chains in front of the deputy commissioners’ offices of every district across Bangladesh, demanding the imposition of high taxes on tobacco products in the coming budget, according to a story in The Financial Express.

The chains were being organized by campaigners with, among other groups, the National Heart Foundation and Progga.

A press note issued by Progga ahead of the demonstrations said that about 100,000 people in Bangladesh died from tobacco-related diseases each year.

It said that nearly seven percent of the population aged between 13 and 15 consumed tobacco products.
