Seoul’s smoking spaces shrinking

Under changes due to go into effect on September 1, people caught smoking within 10 meters of a subway entrance in Seoul, South Korea, will be liable to a fine of up to 100,000 won (about $90), according to a Yonhap News Agency story quoting a city official.

The official said a campaign had been launched in co-operation with the capital city’s wards to raise public awareness about the new regulations.

“Stickers and notices have been placed where needed to warn smokers of the changes and the penalties involved for violators,” he said.

Seoul plans to conduct an intense campaign throughout August to try to get citizens to stop smoking near subway entrances voluntarily.
