 Liverpool lighting the way

Turmeaus, a tiny but popular tobacconist in Liverpool, UK, which was established in 1817, has just become the UK’s largest specialist cigar shop, according to a C.Gars Ltd press note.

London-based C.Gars took over Turmeaus’s business in 2003 and renamed what has become its flagship store, Turmeaus Cigars and Whisky.

The epicentre of cigar retailing in the UK was shifting from London to the North, and sales looked set to grow, said Mitchell Orchant, C.Gars’ managing director.

“Liverpool is in the heart of the Northern Powerhouse and seems to be cornering the market in business start-ups who have something to celebrate,” said Orchant.

“Our very comfortable new cigar sampling lounge in Liverpool with its state-of-the-art smoke extraction is the perfect place for business people to relax, schmooze, and discuss how to build on their success.”

Last year was a boom year for C.Gars, which said that it had enjoyed an unparalleled 40 percent rise in sales from its retail shops in northern Britain, a trend that was showing no signs of slowing down.

Turmeaus Liverpool is said to have one of the largest walk-in humidors in Britain with an extensive range of Havana and New World cigars and tobacco-related products.

“The great news is that Turmeaus Cigars and Whisky is the only place in northern Britain where our customers can legally enjoy a fine cigar indoors and wash it down at a fully licensed bar offering premium whisky by the dram,” said Orchant.

The second phase of C.Gars’ Liverpool development is expected to start being built by the end of this month. It has been designed to provide an additional cigar shop and cigar sampling lounge that will be open till 23.00, as well as a whisky/cocktail lounge and tapas restaurant, and the largest whisky bar in northern Britain.
